Council decision now open for appeals and objections

The Palmerston North City Council has completed a review of its representation arrangements for the next local government elections.

The Council considered 50 submissions on its proposal. It has decided to amend its initial proposal so that the City will be divided into five wards, electing a total of 15 Councillors and a Mayor with ward boundaries similar, but not the same as, the existing ward boundaries. No community boards will be established.

The Council’s initial proposal was that Councillors be elected on a city-wide basis, comprising 15 Councillors and the Mayor.

Any person who made a submission on the Council’s initial proposal may lodge an appeal against the Council’s decision. An appeal must relate to matters raised in that person’s submission.

If a person objects to the Council’s final proposal they may lodge an objection to that proposal. Any objection must identify the matters to which the objection relates.

Appeals and objections must be lodged with the Council by 20 December 2012.

Information on the proposal, maps of the proposed wards, directions for lodging appeals or objections, and appeal or objection forms can be obtained from the PNCC Customer Service Centre, any branch of the City Library, the Council website or by contacting the Council on 356 8199.

All appeals and objections received by the Council will be sent to the Local Government Commission who will announce its decision by 10 April 2013. Local government elections will be held on 12 October 2013.
