Papakura Train Station Ticket Office Reopens
Early this morning a piece of Papakura rail history got a new lease of life when the old heritage building reopened.
The building has been relocated to the west side of the station. It has been refurbished, has a new verandah and now
houses a ticket office, information displays, new public toilets and room for a café kiosk.
Inside the old signal panel has been preserved and there will be a wall display of the station from bygone years.
Auckland Transport’s Project Director Rail Improvements, Nick Seymour, says it is rewarding for everyone involved to see
the building come back in to use.
“The results of the past months work at the station are obvious. The refurbished ticket office, platform three is wider
and longer giving passengers more room and comfort. HOP machines are in place, there is more lighting and CCTV cameras.
Images of old Papakura etched on the glass panels of the passenger shelters all add to the history of the station.
“Everything is on track and coming together nicely,” says Mr Seymour.
The next stage of works includes the temporary closure of platform 2 and all trains will operate from platforms 1 and 3
only.
Platform two is being upgraded to cater for an eventual increase in services and will get new passenger furniture.
Passengers will need to check passenger information displays and listen for announcements for train platform departure
details as trains will not necessarily leave from the same platform each time.
At the same time KiwiRail is undertaking a major re-arrangement of the tracks and platforms to provide a dedicated
freight line through the station, and optimise track and platform layout in preparation for electrification.
Other plans include the reconfiguration of Railway St West so buses can approach the station as part of a transport
interchange.
