Fun, Free Family Day to say Family Violence is Not OK, (But it’s OK To Ask For Help)
On November 25th from 11am – 3pm the Dunedin Collaboration Against Family Violence (DCAFV) will be hosting a large array
of FREE events and entertainment for Dunedin residents to show their support for White Ribbon Day.
White Ribbon Day (25 November) is the international day when people, particularly men, wear a white ribbon to show they
won’t tolerate or condone violence towards women.
It is also the day for celebrating those many men who are willing to show leadership and commitment to promote safe,
healthy relationships in families.
There will be live music from bands such as Matt Langley, Julian Temple Band, King Leo, DelGirl, Both Sides of the Line,
and many more.
There will also be Kapa Haka performances from Fairfield Primary, Otago Boys and Otago Girls High Schools.
FREE children's entertainment includes two large bouncy castles, face painting, Filipa Fairy and Jay Juggler. There will
also be FREE candy floss (thanks to sponsorship from Jumping Jacks Castles) and a FREE sausage sizzle.
There will be key note speakers on the day, including Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Otago, Professor
Mark Henaghan, whom will speak at 12.30pm. "Family violence is not so much a violation of society's norms as an extreme
expression of them", said Professor Mark Henaghan of family violence in NZ, which is why we need to change societal
norms as a community.
A children's art display is being hosted on the day by Barnardos, with the theme ‘Awesome Families’. Barnardos are
taking entries up until November 23rd, and there will be prizes for all entries on the day, thanks to the wonderful
sponsorship from the following businesses; Countdown, The Warehouse, Mitre 10 Mega, Laserforce, McDonalds and Cadburys.
Information stalls from various community support services such as Youthline, Shakti, Presbyterian Support, Barnardos
and DCAFV will also be present.
DCAFV Coordinator Bonnie Scarth said “We are looking forward to seeing a great turnout from Dunedin on the day; taking
part in making a stand against family violence, and enjoying a fun day of free family entertainment and activities goes
some way to strengthening our community”.
