Improvements planned for Petone traffic signals
Changes to the traffic signals at the Cuba/Jackson Street intersection and the Cuba Esplanade intersection in Petone are
set to improve usage for both motorists and pedestrians.
At the Cuba/Jackson Street traffic signals the existing diagonal-style pedestrian crossing signals will be changed to
parallel.
This means reduced delays for motorists and pedestrians as traffic will flow more freely and pedestrians will have less
waiting time.
New yellow tiles at the pedestrian crossing will be installed and cautionary signs put in place until users become
confident with the new arrangement.
At the Cuba Esplanade signals, between Tory and Aurora streets, under-utilised parking spaces will be removed to allow
for two lanes of eastbound traffic to flow from the signals.
Senior traffic engineer Wayne King says the recent change to the national give way rules makes increasing the eastbound
lanes from one to two an easy and low-cost option to improve traffic flow on the city’s busiest road.
“This work in Petone is scheduled to start on Monday 19 November and while they’re relatively small changes, the benefit
to motorists and pedestrians will be great,” he says.
