Light House Cinema Cuba Opens
Tuesday 6 November 2012
Light House Cinema Comes to Town
Light House Cinema, currently based in Petone and Pauatahanui, has opened an additional cinema in Wellington’s bohemian
Cuba quarter, at 29 Wigan Street opposite Havana Bar. Light House Cuba offers a relaxed luxury cinema-going experience
with their winning mix of well-chosen movies, classy theatres with comfy couches, excellent café food and drinks, and
friendly service.
The central city purpose-built “mini-plex” houses three large screens which seat 34, 55, and 74 in each. The site was
originally built as horse stables in the early 1900’s by Thomas Turnbull and Son and was most recently used by a car
valet service before construction began on the new cinema.
Light House owner Simon Werry says “We have long felt that we were a good fit with the discerning and creative Cuba
community. We show a diverse range of films, with an emphasis on specifically chosen pieces direct from art-house
festivals, along with other thought-provoking or artistic movies. To complete the spectrum of quality entertainment we
also include selected mainstream releases. Right now we are looking forward to providing people with another option to
see the new James Bond flick Skyfall and The Hobbit.”
“We believe Light House Cuba will not only cater for the inner city community, but also become an attraction from
further afield. We are hoping people will make a night of it by coming into town to dine at one of the many restaurants
around Cuba Street, visit Light House for a great movie, then grab a desert or drink nearby afterwards.”
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says this is great news for Wellington's Cuba quarter. "The addition of Light House Cuba's high
quality arthouse cinema experience sits perfectly with Wellington's boutique flavour." says Mayor Wade-Brown. "It’s
great to see new businesses committing to our city, especially when they embrace Wellington as the Coolest Little
Capital in the World.
Light House Cuba Manager Chloe Forbes says “We are also looking forward to supporting the local community with
fundraisers, gala evenings and personalised events. We offer a variety of packages for private hires. You can treat your
guests to a red carpet premiere or gather your friends for a luxurious night out at the movies. No matter the occasion
we enjoy sharing our love of cinema with anyone who visits.”
