Council’s ‘Manky’ a winner at surveyors’ national awards

ROTORUA 02.11.12: A partnership between Rotorua District Council (RDC) and Canmap Hawley Ltd has resulted in a win for the local surveying company’s ‘The Manky’ fabric map creation.

The NZ Institute of Surveyors awarded Canmap Hawley the 2012 NZIS Award of Excellence (Silver Level) for the Redwoods - Whakarewarewa Forest Recreation Maps project at its Annual Conference Dinner and Awards Ceremony in Invercargill at the weekend.

The Manky, a combination of the words ‘map’ and ‘hanky’, is a popular navigational tool for Whakarewarewa Forest and Redwoods enthusiasts. Made of micro-fibre the forest map is durable, legible when wet, can be washed and dried, is absorbent, anti-bacterial, eco-friendly, and re-usable.

RDC Redwoods Forest & Visitor Centre manager Julianne Wilkinson says Canmap Hawley has been involved in the development of a number of resources that contribute to the safety and enjoyment of recreational users of The Redwoods.

“Canmap Hawley’s contribution to this project not only enabled a better range of products to be offered to recreational users, but also meant that what was once pieced together map information from a variety of sources, is now complete, accurate and can be updated on an ongoing basis. This ensures that these and other creative products, like phone applications, can be developed in the future.”

Mrs Wilkinson said Rotorua District Council is proud to be part of an innovative partnership with local business Canmap Hawley to deliver community benefits that otherwise may not be possible.
