No Port Hills – No Problem for Lyttelton Harbour Walking Festival
Starting this Saturday and running for two weekends (November 3rd, 4th and 10th 11th) the Lyttelton Harbour Festival of
Walking returns with over 30 walks that offer to take you to some intriguing and wonderful places. The Port Hills may
remain closed due to rock fall hazards but this festival shows just how much there is still available to harbour
residents and visitors.
Think Coastal:
For coastal lovers there is a family pushchair walk from Governors Bay to Allendale with a scavenger hunt, a Coastal
Cliff Ecology walk in Diamond Harbour, and a chance to meet the Coast guard and visit their premises.
Think Flora:
Meet some remarkable trees with Arborist Tim Harris at Orton Bradley Park, Get Wild about Plants with John Thacker as
you tour the good the bad and the ugly of every day gardens in Governors Bay, or learn about ecology with Serra Kilduff
Think Fauna:
Visit chooks in their own backyards on a tour of Lyttelton Chickens, meet sheep, alpacas, cows and calves at Bergli Farm
in Teddington or seek out Penguins in the Harris Bay area with Dr Chris Challies.
Think Spectacular views:
Living Springs offers a stunning view of the harbour and headlands with daily walks, or you can climb up under the rocky
Mount Bradley at Orton Bradly Park or clamber with Alpacas to the top of Bergli Hill.
Think arts:
Take a rare peak inside local artists’ studios, have an architectural photography lesson as you explore Lyttelton or go
on a Poetry Ramble to meet and hear local poets in various Lyttelton settings.
Think history:
Discover Purau past and present as you take the old stock route from Diamond Harbour, or Rediscover Lyttelton – whats
gone, what remains and whats new, ask questions as you explore the historic township
Think something different:
Take an insiders guided tour of the Lyttelton Farmers Market (including tastings!), sign up a team and play the
Lyttelton I-spy event, or pick up a Family Quiz from the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre and self guide your way to
the Torpedo Boat museum (free ice cream from London Street Dairy for all correct quiz entries).
Most walks cost just $5 (children free) with funds donated to the Lyttelton Harbour Information and Resource Centre.
Bookings to be made through the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre on 03 3289093, download your full program from www.lyttelton.net.nz
