Marguerita St upgrade and roundabout underway

ROTORUA 24.10.12: Work has begun in Marguerita Street to replace water mains, re-lay pavements, and construct a new roundabout at the intersection with Fenton Street.

Rotorua District Council works manager Peter Dine said the $440,000 project should rectify structural problems in the Marguerita Street area between Fenton and Hilda streets. He said the government was contributing $126,000 of the construction costs through NZTA (NZ Transport Agency).

“Marguerita Street’s pavement has been failing for some time due to poor soil conditions, while repeated infrastructural work has led to ongoing problems of uneven pavements from construction and vehicle vibrations.

“The water mains have also reached the end of their useful life and are due for replacement.”

Mr Dine said the roundabout is the second of three new roundabouts scheduled along Fenton Street, which has the highest crash rate of any Rotorua street.

The first of the three roundabouts was completed in the 2011/12 financial year at the Devon/Fenton street intersection, while the third will be constructed later at the intersection of Robertson and Fenton streets.

“The Marguerita/Fenton intersection does has a high crash rate in itself, and this new roundabout will improve safety there and help reduce the overall crash rate along Fenton St.

“Improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists are also part of long term proposals for Fenton Street,” said Mr Dine.

Work on the Marguerita Street upgrade and roundabout project is scheduled for completion by Christmas, and while only minimal traffic delays are expected, Mr Dine is urging patience and extra care from drivers while construction work is underway.
