Wellington Rape Crisis celebrates 35 years of supporting survivors

Wellington Rape Crisis (WRC) will celebrate 35 years of supporting survivors with a birthday party at Meow Cafe on the 26th October. The agency was established in 1977 by a small group of women who identified, and responded to, a community need.

After a turbulent year for WRC, Agency Manager Natalie Gousmett says the event is well deserved. “This will be an opportunity to celebrate our agency’s hard work and commitment over the past 35 years”, says Gousmett.

“Providing counselling and support to survivors of rape and sexual abuse with minimal government funding can be very challenging. We’re thrilled to have this opportunity to celebrate our history, staff, volunteers, and all the generous funders and people who support us financially. I’d like to give a big thank you to the volunteer organiser and musicians for giving up their time and talent for us.”

The WRC Birthday Party will include performances by Sophie and the Realistic Expectations, Phoebe Hurst, Jessie Moss, Hula Hope and hula hoop artist Ryn Hooligan.

Sophie lead singer from Sophie and the Realistic Expectations says the band is pleased to show their support for WRC. “We are opposed to any and all violence or coercive horribleness against anybody. Playing for the 35th anniversary of Wellington Rape Crisis is a way of expressing part of that commitment. We feel enormously proud and privileged to support an organisation which has helped so many people.”
