It’s a karma thing – be in to win!

It’s a karma thing – be in to win!

The virtues of recycling are being promoted in a new high-tech way for Whangarei District Council.

For six weeks from 22 October to 3 December people who have smart phones and use the permanent recycling bins on Whangarei’s central city streets and the one on the foreshore at Tutukaka will be able to go into a draw to win points for great prizes.

Council is joining the ‘It’s a Karma thing” campaign organised by Love NZ.

“We will be sticking QR codes to all our recycling bins and people who download the app onto their phones will be able to scan the codes to earn points that they can use to bid on auctions on the www.karmathing.co.nz website,” said WDC Field Officer Grant Alsop.

“It’s a really new thing for Council to do this – we tweet and we have a facebook page, but this is the first time we have used a QR code in our work. It should appeal to a whole new group of customers.

“Love NZ gave our district three new recycling bins when the Rugby World Cup games were held here last year, taking our total to 14.

“Over the past two or three years people have been using them the right way more and more, with far less non-recyclable material going into them now.”

Mr Alsop said new bins would also be going into the revamped Central City carpark in the weeks to come.
