North Shore Gymnastics Community to Celebrate Past and Present at 25th Anniversary
North Harbour Gymnastics Club Celebrates 25 Years

For the past 25 years North Harbour Gymnastics has trained some of the most talented gymnasts in New Zealand as well as grown to be the country’s largest gymnastics club. On 17 November the club will celebrate this achievement with a Gala Dinner at the North Shore Events Centre. The 25th Anniversary celebration will be an opportunity for anyone who has been involved with the club from gymnasts, coaches and parents through to board members to come together to renew old ties and celebrate the clubs success. Tickets can be purchased via iticket, or directly from the club.

North Harbour Gymnastics has produced and continues to train world class gymnasts with many having competed at World Championships, Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Laura Robertson was an Artistic gymnast who competed at the 2000 Olympics, and particularly memorable was Nikki Jenkins, who won a Gold medal for her vault at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. More recently young North Harbour Gymnast, Brittany Robertson won two silver medals at the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Games while 3 of our U12 Boys were in the NZ team that took out the Trans Tasman title as well as winning a number of individual apparatus at this years Australian National Championships.

The club provides classes for pre-schoolers, Rhythmic and recreational gymnastics, schools as well as high performance competitive squads for both men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics. The club also facilitates adult gymnastics attracting athletes from other sports such as snowboarding, free running, dancing; cheer leading and martial arts who want to learn essential gymnastics skills.

Gymnastics has rapidly increased in popularity, as parents, and coaches recognise that every sport requires the core competencies of gymnastics such as balance, agility, strength, speed and flexibility. In 2011 AUT’s School of Sport and Recreation, undertook a study at North Harbour Gymnastics into the effect of gymnastics training on the physical function in children. The study showed that with just one term of gymnastics training, children had an increase in abdominal strength, flexibility, coordination and lower body strength.

North Harbour Gymnastics Centre (Inc.) is a product of nearly 40 years of gymnastics developed on the North Shore. In 1987 the centre was established as an amalgamation of the North Shore Gymnastics Club, East Coast Bays Gymnastics Club, Birkenhead Gymnastics Club and North Shore YMCA Rhythmic Gymnastics Club with premises in Kaimahi Place, Wairau Valley. In August 1992 the club moved to its current centre when the North Shore City Council completed the new stadium known as the North Shore Events and Gymnastics Centre. Since 1992 the centre has grown exponentially and is now the largest gymnastics club in New Zealand and provides the widest range of gymnastics services on the North Shore. A satellite centre was set-up on the Hibiscus Coast in September 2004 as well as satellite groups who train in Owera and Glamorgan. North Harbour Gymnastics Trust is run by a board of trustees, assisted by parent support committees for both artistic and rhythmic gymnastics as well as full time coaching staff who look after the men’s and women’s competitive, pre-school gymnastics, general gymnastics, adult gym and schools programme.
