MEDIA RELEASE

21 September 2012

Join the ShakeOut at Wellington Airport

Wellington Airport invites everyone to participate in the New Zealand ShakeOut in the main terminal this Wednesday 26 September at 09:26am.

“New Zealand ShakeOut is an important initiative for everyone to participate in. The airport team is focusing on this day, not only to build awareness of the ‘Drop, Cover, Hold’ action, but also to use as a platform to conduct an airport earthquake exercise,” said Steve Sanderson, Chief Executive of Wellington Airport.

Joining the airport will be Kāpiti Mayor Jenny Rowan, who is the Chair of the Wellington Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, “I hope everyone in the region will take time out to participate in this exercise. If the real thing happens, knowing what to do to survive could literally be the difference between life and death. I hope other business and public utilities will take the lead of the airport in taking the business of preparedness seriously.”

Also participating is Bruce Pepperell the Regional Manager of the newly formed Wellington Civil Defence Emergency Management Office. “New Zealand ShakeOut is a fantastic opportunity for businesses and organisations to develop, review and test their emergency plans. The commitment shown by the airport to NZ ShakeOut highlights our awareness of earthquakes, but also demonstrates the desire of our businesses and communities to be better prepared for earthquakes”.

“This event will be a great reminder that we all need to be prepared and know what to do in the event of a big quake or some other emergency,” Mayor Wade-Brown says.

Mr Sanderson said, “as one of Wellington’s significant life lines in a major earthquake, it is imperative that we stay on top of our emergency plan protocols and knowledge. The schools are really getting behind the ShakeOut and it is important that the work place and public facilities join in too”.
