Aussie Rules ANZAC Day Match would be a Welcome Addition to Wellington’s Event Calendar
The Wellington Business community is sure to get right behind the Australian Football League premiership match to be played at Westpac Stadium on Anzac Day 2013, according to the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.
“It is an exciting opportunity for Wellington to host the first ever AFL premiership match outside Australia,” said Chamber President Richard Stone.
“AFL is a billion dollar industry in Australia and, as well being an historic sporting occasion, having the game here on ANZC day provides a real economic opportunity.
“An event such as this will bring visitors to the city and raise the city’s profile in Australia.
“If it is successful and becomes an annual event it will be a welcome addition to Wellington’s event program.
“Other sporting events such as the Rugby Sevens have demonstrated the contribution they can make to the retail, hospitality, accommodation sectors but more importantly is the exposure given to Australia at a time when there is increasing interest in Wellington from across the Tasman.
“We intend to work with our counterparts at the Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce to explore the business opportunities for Wellington resulting from this initiative,” Mr Stone concluded.
