Have your say on local representation

At present residents of Palmerston North elect their Councillors from wards, however, changes are proposed that will abolish this practice.

The Palmerston North City Council is proposing that Councillors be elected on a city-wide basis.
John Annabell, electoral officer said this means that you may vote for any Councillor who stands for election.

“The Council voted to make the changes and now we need to hear what the public thinks. The election of Councillors on a city-wide basis will enable all electors to participate in choosing all of the Councillors. The number of Councillors will remain at 15,” he said.

The Council is satisfied that the City does not include any communities that are so distinct or isolated as to require representation. Therefore it is proposed that no community boards be established in Palmerston North.

The Palmerston North City Council is calling for submissions on the above proposals and would like to hear your thoughts.

Copies of the Council’s resolutions, and submission forms are available from pncc.govt.nz, the Customer Service Centre, Squareside, at all branches of the City Library or by phoning 356 8199.
