Works for most of week on SH 2 from Domain to Bruce Road, Papamoa
Motorists travelling along State Highway 2 are advised that road repairs will be carried out between Bruce Road and the Domain Road intersection over the next few days.
The work is required to make repairs to cracks in the road surface caused by the weight of pre-load material being used to construct the new Tauranga Eastern Link road.
NZ Transport Agency’s Bay of Plenty state highways manager, Brett Gliddon, says the weight of the pre-load, and the associated settlement, is continuing to cause cracks to this section of the highway, which will require ongoing repairs until the pre-load is removed in 2013.
“The pre-load (sand) material has been laid adjacent to the highway where the new TEL road will be constructed. This material will be compacted to form the new state highway.”
The road works will start from tomorrow (4th September) through to Thursday 6th September, from 9.00am to 3.00pm. A speed restriction of 50km/h will be in place from Domain Road intersection to Bruce Road and both the northbound and southbound lanes will be moved to one side when the 50km/h speed restriction is in place. Once the repairs are completed this section of State Highway 2 will revert back to the normal 80km/h speed restriction.
This work is weather dependant, and if it is wet the work will be take place on the next suitable day.
The NZTA thanks motorists for their continued patience and assistance while this work is being undertaken, for more information about this road works please visit our website www.nzta.govt.nz or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).

The four-lane Tauranga Eastern Link will run from Te Maunga (near Baypark Stadium) in Tauranga to the existing junction of State Highways 2 and 33 (the Rotorua and Whakatane highways) near Paengaroa. It will be made up of 17km of new road and an upgrade of six kilometres of existing highway. The new highway is expected to open to traffic in 2016.
The Government has identified seven essential state highway projects linked to New Zealand’s economic prosperity. Called the roads of national significance, or RoNS for short, the NZTA is charged with delivering this programme of state highway improvements within the next 10 years. The RoNS programme represents one of New Zealand’s biggest ever infrastructure investments and is a key part of the Government’s National Infrastructure Plan and Government’s Policy Statement for transport.
The seven RoNS projects are based around
New Zealand's five largest population centres. The focus is
on moving people and freight between and within these
centres more safely and efficiently. Other RoNS may be added
in future but currently from north to south the seven
projects are: Puhoi to Wellsford - SH1, Completing the Western Ring Route,
Auckland - SH16, SH18 and SH20, Victoria Park Tunnel, Auckland - SH1, Waikato Expressway - SH1, Tauranga Eastern Link - SH2, Wellington Northern Corridor - SH1, Christchurch Motorways. More information
