Protest at Central City Library
It’s not often that Auckland’s Central City Library has a protest in its midst, but that’s exactly what’s being celebrated in the Sir George Grey Special Collections exhibition room right now.
Librarian Kate de Courcy says the Protest! A cry for freedom exhibition looks at the reasons people protest and the ways they do it.
“From Martin Luther and the protestant reformation of the 16th century to the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, protests, demonstrations and civil disobedience have shaped society and left their mark on history.
“The exhibition looks at universal themes of race, religion, power, land, peace, work, gender and the environment which, over the centuries, have brought the ordinary man to react against the status quo.
“The ephemera associated with protests and demonstrations give an insight into the responses that major issues can provoke.”
The exhibition, which runs until 11 November, features items from the Sir George Grey Special Collections, including 20th century protest posters and one of the water-stained logbooks from Greenpeace’s environmental campaign ship, the Rainbow Warrior.
