One-way across South Brighton’s bridge from Monday, 3 September

South Brighton’s Bridge Street bridge will be exit only from the beach suburb from this Monday, 3 September.

Wastewater pipe repair work at the Estuary Road roundabout means that a full lane will be closed, requiring a detour. Bridge Street from the South Brighton roundabout to the Anzac Drive/Bexley Road roundabout will be west-bound only.

Electronic messaging is advertising the change to road users this week and residents have received work notices in letterboxes.

Traffic into South Brighton and Southshore will come through New Brighton via the Pages Road bridge or other bridges across the Avon. The signposted detour route at the Pages Road bridge will direct traffic along Seaview Road to Hardy Street then along to Owles Terrace. Fulton Hogan, part of SCIRT, is coordinating the wastewater pipe replacement in South Brighton, at the roundabout and along to Cromer Place, as closely as possible with the bridge repairs.

The repairs to the bridge itself, which follows on from the wastewater pipe replacement on Bridge Street, will take around 10-12 months to complete. The bridge will remain open in both directions for cyclists and pedestrian traffic.

The one-way detour is the preferred option for managing the bridge and wastewater repair as there is not enough queuing space at the roundabouts at either end. Traffic would potentially block these intersections under a one-way traffic lights or manual traffic management system, with significant delays and risks.

In a Civil Defence emergency the works down Bridge Street and on the bridge will allow traffic to flow out of Southshore and South New Brighton. Works will immediately cease.
