Waimakariri Zone Committee meeting
The Waimakariri Zone Committee will meet for its monthly meeting on Monday, 3 September, in Rangiora.
The committee will begin with an update from the Regional Committee, which considers region-wide issues of environmental restoration and repair; land use impacts on water quality; as well as water storage, distribution and efficiency options.
The committee will then look at important issues relating to water management in the zone including gravel management, surface and ground water resources, and Environment Canterbury’s proposed Land and Water Regional Plan.
The proposed LWRP provides the framework to facilitate delivery of the community’s aspirations for water management – as set out in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).
The committee will also receive an update from Environment Canterbury staff on resource consents in the zone before ending the meeting by looking at how it can work with Environment Canterbury to develop a zone specific publication to complement Wai Water.
Wai Water is a book-style magazine developed by Environment Canterbury as a community awareness and education resource to build understanding of Canterbury’s water resource and its management in the context of the CWMS and its guiding principles.
Following the public meeting, the committee will meet for an open work-shop to look at the implementation of its water management programme, and receive presentations on local government and the Department of Conservation.
The zone committee operates as a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and the Waimakariri District Council. The Waimakariri Zone includes the Ashley River catchment and shares the Waimakariri catchment below the gorge with the Selwyn- Waihora and Christchurch-West Melton zones. It includes Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Oxford.
