Connecting New Aucklanders with Local Communities

Press Release: Connecting New Aucklanders with Local Communities and Services
28th August 28/08/2012

Representatives of over 40 service providers along with interested newcomers are participating in a Local Settlement Network meeting this Friday, 30th August, aimed at generating collaborative ideas about building social connectedness within Auckland’s inner city boundaries.

The CBD Network meeting is being organised by Settlement Support Auckland Central supported by Auckland Regional Migrant Services (ARMS), and funded by Immigration NZ. According to the Auckland Central Settlement Support Coordinator, Joseph Ngui, the meeting will draw on the findings of a recent survey conducted by Parnell Community Trust which surveyed Auckland’s inner city residents about their experiences of social connectedness. The 2006 Census showed that Auckland’s CBD residents live in around 8,500 households with the majority aged below 45 years, 67% born overseas, and including families with young children.

This Network Meeting will be an interactive opportunity for civic agencies and service providers to scope how they can contribute to make Auckland’s inner city a truly liveable environment for its residents. Collaboration is needed to facilitate more opportunities, programmes and information exchange within the inner city environment, enabling residents to engage around common interests and form strong social ties.

“Newcomers are keen to know about local networks or community groups which they can join. We’re bringing agencies together to collaborate through their various activities, resources and media to increase opportunities for Auckland’s inner city residents to connect in local community spaces, have a greater sense of belonging, and feel supported by services.”

The Local Settlement Network Meeting will be held on Thursday, 30th August 2012, from 9.00am – 2.00pm at the Elim Christian Centre, 74 Cook Street, Auckland Central.
