25,500 in Hawke’s Bay participating in national earthquake drill
As of today, more than 25,500 Hawke’s Bay people have signed up to take part in New Zealand’s biggest ever earthquake
drill, New Zealand ShakeOut.
Nationally the aim is to have one million people do the “Drop, Cover and Hold” earthquake drill at 9:26-26:9 (9:26am on
26 September 2012) and in Hawke’s Bay the goal is 35,000!
Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Manager Ian Macdonald says with just a month to go until the drill
the region is well on the way to its target, but there is still a way to go to reach 35,000.
He says Napier is currently leading the charge with nearly 9,800 residents registered to take part, while Hastings is a
close second with just over 9,000 signed up.
The 9:26-26:9 earthquake drill is the focal point of New Zealand ShakeOut because it is a clear, simple action that
people can take to help prepare themselves for an earthquake. It is also a first step, and it encourages people to look
at their preparedness in more detail.
Getting involved in Shakeout is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

2. Spread the word (share with friends, family and workmates via word of mouth, Facebook, Twitter, email and other
methods).
3. Do the drill Drop, Cover and Hold drill on 9:26-26:9.
