Christchurch shows leadership in NZ ShakeOut
Christchurch residents are being asked to show the rest of New Zealand that we are serious about being prepared by
taking part in a nationwide earthquake drill being coordinated by the Ministry of Civil Defence Emergency Management and
Local Authorities around New Zealand.
The drill, to be held on Wednesday 26 September at 9:26am, has been created to help people and organisations around New
Zealand get better prepared for major earthquakes and practice what to do when they happen.
The message of the drill is simple: Drop, Cover and Hold.
Mayor Bob Parker says it’s important for Christchurch to participate in the drill because of what we have been through.
“The people of Christchurch have learned a lot, and by participating we are telling the rest of New Zealand that
everyone needs to practise and be prepared for an emergency. It’s vital that we all know what to do and how to keep
ourselves safe.”
Christchurch City Council has already joined up to participate.
Christchurch City Council Civil Defence Emergency Management is aiming to have 100,000 people register in Christchurch
alone. To date there are over 45,000 people registered in the city, including 2,600 Council staff, with the number
increasing daily.
