HBRC Takes Another Step Towards Developing A Biodiversity Strategy
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has endorsed an approach for developing a biodiversity strategy for the region.
In HBRC’s 2012-2022 Long Term Plan it committed to developing a regional biodiversity strategy over the next 18 months.
The aim of the biodiversity strategy is to develop a framework to guide activities that protect and manage biodiversity
in Hawke’s Bay. It will also set long term goals to achieve effective habitat protection to enable successful and
diverse ecological systems, and identify priority areas for action and the additional funding required.
Recognising there are many agencies, community groups and individuals involved in biodiversity enhancement in Hawke’s
Bay, the strategy will be developed in a collaborative way with a forum facilitated by HBRC.
HBRC is currently reviewing regional and national approaches to biodiversity management, as well as looking at what the
organisation is already doing in relation to biodiversity.
As part of its ‘Nature Central’ initiative between Greater Wellington, Horizons and Hawke’s Bay Regional Councils and
the Department of Conservation, HBRC is working closely with DOC to align databases to determine priority areas and
assess projects where there could be efficiencies.
