Sulphur smell returns to Region
Sulphur is once again being smelt throughout the Horizons Region but Horizons emergency manager Shane Bayley says there
is no need to be concerned.
“The sulphur we’re smelling today is the result of wind drift from the mountain. It is reminiscent of Rotorua but it is
not a cause for concern,” Mr Bayley says.
“Our air quality monitoring sites in Taumarunui and Taihape are not showing any elevated presence of fine air particles.
However, our team will be keeping an eye on the situation and will alert the public if this situation changes.”
Suphur smells have become common since the eruption of Mount Tongariro at 11.50pm Monday August 6 with many residents
reporting the odour to Horizons’ customer services team.
Since this eruption seismic activity has remained low. The volcanic alert level remains at 2 - Minor eruptive activity,
and GNS will continue to monitor the situation.
