Entries roll in for Hawke’s Bay Asian awards
Organisers are pleased with the number of nominations received for the inaugural Asians in the Bay awards 2012.
The awards will be presented to Hawke’s Bay based Asian entrepreneurs, professionals and community organisations at a
gala ceremony at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House on Saturday August 25th.
The three categories for the awards are: outstanding entrepreneurs, practising professionals, and outstanding community
groups. The awards will honour businesses and individuals who are making a difference in the community and organisations
which have helped promote their own particular culture.
Organiser Leah Burling says “A total of 25 nominations have been received in the three categories. A wide range of
occupations are covered in the professionals category including nominations for a social worker, a doctor, nurses, an
engineer, an artist, a teacher, an accountant and a person who works in animal husbandry. There are eight hopefuls in
the entrepreneur category including entries from restaurants, cafes, orchard contractors, takeaway businesses and a
person who runs a barbers shop.”
Organisations contesting the community groups category include the Chinese Association of Hawke’s Bay, NZ-China
Friendship Society of Hawke’s Bay, Thai-Buddhist Community, Sri Lankan Community, Indonesian Community of Hawke’s Bay,
Philippine Community of Hawke’s Bay and the Filipino Dairy Farm Workers Association.
Leah Burling says “The large number and range of nominations will make the judges’ task of choosing the winners in each
category a very difficult one. The awards evening will include entertainment by performing groups from the Chinese,
Philippine and Indonesian communities.”
