Bright spark releases report on youth volunteering
Youth around the globe will be celebrated this Sunday 12th August - on the International Day of Youth. Our own
Elizabeth Chan has released a youth volunteering report in light of the festivities.
Elizabeth Chan, the immediate past National President of UN Youth New Zealand volunteered to write a report for
Volunteering New Zealand on youth volunteer recruitment and retention methods.
A keen volunteer herself, Elizabeth says, “Volunteering is a great way for us young people to learn about our
communities and to broaden our understanding about others”.
The report provides an insight into UN Youth New Zealand’s current volunteer status. Vanisa Dhiru, Chief Executive of
Volunteering New Zealand says, “It will benefit volunteer-involving organisations, which are reliant on volunteers”.
Vanisa adds, “Elizabeth gives practical suggestions for volunteer based organisations having had experience in a wide
range of organisations herself”.
Elizabeth has been involved with UN Youth New Zealand for seven years, aiming to educate young New Zealanders about the
United Nations and international affairs. The young leader states; “It is energising to take on a cause and to take
action to improve your community.”
The report has been made public on Volunteering New Zealand's website; www.volunteeringnz.org.nz.
International Day of Youth is celebrated each year on the 12th of August. It is a celebration of the world’s youth, a time for adults to engage with youth and be positive role
models.
Elizabeth Chan is a volunteer with Volunteering New Zealand, and also one of three finalists for the 2012 Young New
Zealander of the Year.
The UN Youth New Zealand/VNZ report includes; the UN Youth's mission, their programmes, organisational structure, three
case studies of current volunteers, recruitment and engagement methods of volunteers. Elizabeth outlines useful,
practical suggestions for volunteer-involving organisations.
