Stadium floor to close for replacement:
Otara Leisure Centre
The stadium floor at Otara Leisure Centre will be closed from today (Friday 10 August 2012) to be replaced.
The closure follows serious flooding in late May, which caused extensive damage to the wooden sprung floor.
Otara Leisure Centre manager Mike Ibbertson says every effort has been made to save the floor but the latest assessment shows it is damaged beyond repair.
“We have tried every available method to dry out and repair the floor, but the impact of water damage on wood is very difficult to rectify,” he says.
“This was an extremely unfortunate accident and we are now working to reinstate a safe and functional stadium playing surface.”
It is anticipated that the facility will be closed for around 10 weeks and that the work will be covered by insurance.
All sports activities scheduled to take place in the stadium during this time will be either cancelled, or transferred to other recreation stadiums within the Manukau Leisure network.
The facility may still be used by children's play groups and other user groups not playing sport.
