A–League Football Returns to Christchurch
MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE USE: 8 AUGUST 2012
A–League Football Returns to Christchurch
The first football fixture to be played
at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium in Addington will see New
Zealand’s A-League Wellington Phoenix meet newcomers
Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday 23 September.
Following a challenging and hectic schedule in Australia and India, the Phoenix will complete their pre season programme back in Christchurch before returning to Wellington to start the official season on 6 October.
The Phoenix last played in Christchurch December 2010 following record breaking crowds in January earlier that year. Vbase General Manager, Russell Kenny says, “We’re very excited to be bringing this event back to the city and believe the people of Christchurch and Canterbury will support us in welcoming them back.”
Organisers will be working with local sporting organisations and community groups to put on a great experience for all, in particular the younger generation of footballers in the region.
“I’m really stoked to be going back to Christchurch again,” says local hero Ben Sigmund. “We loved going there for the games against Adelaide United and one of my best Phoenix memories is scoring the winning goal in the second of those games.
We are looking forward to rebuilding the relationship the team has built up with Christchurch and playing at the new Stadium.”
Tickets are priced for family with adults just $15 and $5 for children under 14. Tickets will be on sale from Ticketek Wednesday 15 August.
Gates open at 1pm and kickoff is scheduled for 2.30pm.
