SADD students champion road safety initiatives
Horizons Regional Council’s road safety coordinators are set to visit high schools throughout the region this National SADD Week (Students Against Driving Drunk) with a real life example of the dangers of drink driving.
The Last Choice Crash Car is a car that was in a fatal crash involving a Wellington teenager. Donated by the teen’s family, it provides a graphic display of the consequences of drink driving and is a valuable tool in road safety education.
Horizons road safety coordinator for Tararua Debbie Webster says road crashes are the single greatest killer of 15 to 24 year olds and resources like the Crash Car help communicate the potential impact of making the wrong decision.
They also provide an opportunity for students to manage their own education and share that learning with their peers.
“We find that most high schools have really strong SADD teams and are proactive in organising activities such as balloon releases, black out days and free sausage sizzles where students are required to answer a question about road safety,” Ms Webster says.
“Students are really receptive to programmes they can get right into. With SADD, students take ownership of the programme and that often means they take the messages home with them.
“It’s fantastic to see students taking responsibility for educating themselves and their peers and we really like to encourage that,” she says.
The Last Choice Crash Car will be at the following schools during SADD week which runs from Monday 13 August to Sunday 19 August and media are invited to attend.
