What a year for Wynyard Quarter
This weekend Auckland Theatre Company is celebrating Wynyard Quarter’s first birthday and if its proposed theatre
proceeds as planned, Aucklanders will have an additional reason to head down to the waterfront.
In only two short years the planning, opening and revitalisation of Wynyard Quarter has gone from strength to strength
and has been transformed into an area Aucklanders are proud of, and a destination they love to visit.
The next couple of years will see further progress being made at an equally rapid pace with significant private and
public investment into the area maintaining that momentum.
ASB Bank's move into the will bring many people into the quarter each day; and the proposed development of Auckland's
new waterfront theatre next door is set to draw in the crowds during the evenings and weekends, something the Wynyard
Quarter's local hospitality businesses are very happy about. (Note: See image below)
“There was a noticeable difference since the end of the Rugby World Cup,” said Shane Lea, Manager of Marvel Grill
Restaurant. “The Quarter is becoming a sociable area and when something is happening people come into the restaurant.”
The Quarter has given Aucklanders a new destination for their Friday and Saturday nights and is helping to keep the
economy going since the Rugby World Cup.
If Auckland Theatre Company’s proposed theatre proceeds as planned, Aucklanders will have an additional reason to head
down to the waterfront.
The waterfront theatre will provide significant cultural and community benefits and will also generate an estimated
additional spend of $8.59 million per annum in the Wynyard Quarter, with an impact on direct waterfront GDP of $3.72
million per annum.
“Auckland Theatre Company is very excited about the prospect of being a part of the Wynyard Quarter and being able to
contribute to the cultural and social experiences that are being cultivated there”, says Auckland Theatre Company’s
General Manager, Lester McGrath.
Auckland Theatre Company believes that, in the words of Auckland Councillor Richard Northey, "the waterfront theatre
will be the jewel in the crown of the Wynyard Quarter development," and a destination all Aucklanders will be proud of.
