SUBJECT:Christchurch launch of Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal
The 2012 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal kicks off on Monday (August 6) to raise money for children’s wards around New
Zealand, including Christchurch Hospital’s.
The appeal involves a series of local and national fundraising events organised by Countdown supermarkets, support
offices and local district health boards.
Countdown’s Brett Ashley, General Manager Supermarket Operations, told those gathered for an official launch ceremony in
Christchurch this week that the Countdown team were energised and enthusiastic about the three month appeal.
“It’s an exciting time for us and I want people to know that what they will be contributing to is a really great cause,
looking after sick kids,” Brett said.
Pauline Clark, Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) General Manager, Medical Surgical and Women’s and Children’s
Health, said the willingness to help was humbling.
“There are a number of worthy causes out there and we appreciate that you choose us,” Pauline said
“We come to work wanting to do our best for families and children and you are focused on that area too. We appreciate
your unselfish commitment.”
Now in its sixth year, the annual appeal has so far donated more than $4.5 million to 10 dedicated children’s wards
throughout New Zealand.
All funds raised go towards purchasing medical equipment for hospitals including Christchurch, Greymouth, Otago,
Invercargill, Whangarei, Waikato, Tauranga, Hawke’s Bay, and Wellington, as well as Kidz First Children’s Hospital in
Auckland.
Last year CDHB received $64,485 from the appeal. The money was used to purchase paediatric intravenous stands and
accessories, portable suction units, tympanic thermometers, breast pumps, a jaundice meter, glucose monitors, and
magnifying glasses.
Ruth Krippner, Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal Chairperson, said there were dozens of ways everyday New Zealanders could
help provide much needed medical support for children.
“The message we want to send out to New Zealanders is that you don’t have to be a doctor or nurse to help sick kids,”
she said.
Hamish Robinson, Area Champion for Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal and Store Manager, Countdown Hornby, said as well as
checkout collections, there were many exciting local events planned, including, a golf day, car rally, store raffle, art
sale and barbecues.
