Food Waste Collection Trial Kicks Off In Raglan
A trial collection of food waste for 100 households in Raglan has been launched this week by Waikato District Council
contractor Xtreme Waste.
The Raglan households in the trial will have a separate bin for food waste such as meat, dairy and vegetable scraps,
which will be processed at the Raglan Recycle Centre and Transfer Station using composting and worm-farming systems.
This will create a rich garden fertiliser which is expected to be available for sale to the public later this year.
“We’re encouraging the Raglan households who are involved in this trial to support the Xtreme Waste initiative,” Water
and Facilities general manager Richard Bax said.
“It’s a great way that the council and the community can work together to lower the amount of rubbish that goes into
landfills,” Mr Bax said.
The council will be monitoring the six month trial to see if a permanent organic waste collection service is viable for
both Raglan and the wider district.
The trial is being funded by the council, Xtreme Waste and the Waste Minimisation Fund.
