Cremated Ashes in Cemeteries

Council Needs to Be Involved When Burying Cremated Ashes in Cemeteries
The Waikato District Council is concerned about a growing trend of people burying cremated remains in cemeteries without contacting the council.
“The burying of remains needs to be done in a sensitive and considered manner that takes into account the overall management of the cemetery,” Water and Facilities general manager Richard Bax said.
Cemeteries are important community facilities, and the council has strict requirements governing how they are used to ensure they meet the current and future needs of the district.
There are many ways family or friends can be involved in the process of burying their loved ones, however the interring of ashes needs to be managed by council’s contractor in an allocated plot.
“We would ask people to show due respect for cemeteries by contacting us to arrange for ashes to be interred in the correct manner,” Mr Bax said.
There are 20 cemeteries within the Waikato district, and more information about burial requirements is available by contacting the council.
