80,000 participants wanted for ShakeOut

Civil Defence staff in Palmerston North are asking everyone in the city to join them in the great New Zealand ShakeOut at 9.26am on Wednesday 26 September, (9:26 – 26.9).

The campaign, which is being held on a national, regional and local level, will be the largest earthquake awareness campaign ever held in New Zealand.

Emergency management officer Jock Robinson said the campaign is designed to get New Zealanders practicing for the ‘big one’. He aims to get as many people in Palmerston North to take part as possible.

“Let’s make this city the best in New Zealand in terms of preparedness and the number of participants,” he said. “There’s no reason why everyone can’t join in this exercise, it doesn’t matter where they are at the time, and if they’re at work then they should encourage others to join in too.”

“It would be great to see every school or education provider registered so that all the students in the City are participating too,” Jock said.

Registering for the event is simple at getthru.govt.nz where individuals, schools and businesses can register. The site can keep track of the number of registrations across the nation. To date the number of registrations in Palmerston North stands at 6406.

PNCC will be posting updates on its Facebook page to encourage others to participate.
