Get traffic updates live and on-line with new website

Wondering what the traffic is like? Now before you hit the road you can check the traffic live and on-line.

My Street maps is now live on the Auckland Transport website: http://www.aucklandtransport.govt.nz/moving-around/traffic-congestion-map/Pages/default.aspx

This is a new Auckland traffic site which gives you information at-a-glance to help you plan your journey.

You can use it to see how traffic is flowing on the motorways, as well as on some of the main arterial roads in Auckland.

Over the coming weeks Auckland Transport will add more routes to the map, giving average travel speeds and an indication of congestion on key routes.

Auckland Transport’s Chief Operations Officer, Greg Edmonds, says “Using this website Aucklanders can plan their journey based on live traffic information. Our aim is to keep Auckland moving and to offer people choices whether using private vehicles or public transport”.

The service is a joint initiative between Auckland Transport and NZ Transport Agency, building on NZTA’s current services providing information to drivers on our motorways and state highways.

“We will be using the resources of Auckland Transport and NZTA to bring motorists the latest road information, including shots from motorway cameras and road maps which refresh every minute. So you’ll always have up-to-date information to help you decide whether to hit the road, stay put or choose a public transport option”, Mr Edmonds says.

Auckland Transport has also erected more electronic signs to help you manage your journey on important routes.

There are six travel time signs on the arterial roads between the CBD and the Airport. There are also six signs between SH1 and SH16 along Greenlane, Balmoral and St Lukes Roads to provide information for motorists on this busy east-west link. Plus there are six electronic signs around Eden Park to manage traffic and provide information about special events.

“This is a good example of AT and the NZTA collaborating to extend the reach of roadside information to give drivers more choices. It not only makes best use of the Joint Transport Operations Centre’s technology, but is also making the best use of Auckland’s existing motorway and roading infrastructure,” he says.

All the new signs, along with existing motorway overhead ones and the estimated travel time signs near on-ramps, can be managed from the Joint Transport Operations Centre (JTOC) and be used to alert motorists to incidents or congestion.

On the website, motorists will also be able to view services from NZTA like the motorway camera images, motorway overhead signs and the estimated travel time signs we see near the on-ramps.

Most information on the map refreshes every minute so motorists will always have up-to-date information to help them decide if they should hit the road, stay put until traffic is flowing better or choose an alternate public transport option.
