Kapa Haka competition an exciting opportunity for Whangarei

Media Release

National Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition an exciting opportunity for Whangarei

ASB Stadium at Kensington Park will be a thriving hive of cultural experience, displays and performance next week during the Nga Kura Tuarua 2012 – The National Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Competitions hosted by Te Tai Tokerau.

Whangarei District Council Positive Growth Manager Jude Thompson said it was an exciting opportunity for Whangarei to be hosting this national cultural event.

“As well as showcasing our City and District we want to manaaki (host) our visitors so they can enjoy all the activities and top quality performances associated with this event. Of course there will be benefits to the wider community especially people and businesses providing accommodation and food.

“Having such a large scale and important event here will also attract a lot of performers and visitors to the area, so many of us will need to adapt to changes in our day-to-day routines around the Park and Stadium – but I know Whangarei people will plan ahead and be helpful.”

Ms Thompson said there would be traffic delays around the Kensington Park area during the event from Monday 23 July to Saturday 28 July.

Monday 23 July to Friday 27 July 2012

Council has approved entry and exit to the ASB Leisure Centre, Table Tennis, Sports House and parking area to be from Western Hills Drive only. The Kensington Ave access will be for the Kapa Haka event only.

As parking will be at a premium, there will be designated ‘drop off’ only areas for those accessing the ASB Leisure Centre services if all car parks are full.

Saturday 28 July

The ASB Stadium will be hosting the Regional Schools Kapa Haka. Entry and exit will be from both Western Hills Drive and Kensington Avenue.

Organisers also expect many people to be moving around the area on foot during the event. To ensure safety the facilities and surrounding parking area will be monitored by security staff.
