Whangarei: Municipal Building 100th Birthday Celebration
Municipal Building 100th Birthday Celebration
Wednesday 11 July marks the 100th anniversary of the Municipal Building at 71 Bank Street.
On Wednesday Whangarei Mayor Morris Cutforth will be hosting a small civic ceremony to mark the occasion of the first stone being laid.
The building has an interesting history and over the past few months Council staff have been gathering memories of the building from a number of local residents. These memories will be displayed proudly at the Old Municipal Building for members of the public to view this week, and will be captured in a 'Memories' book.
Councillors and current and former Council staff will attend the ceremony on Wednesday, along with representatives of the organisations that have been located in the building over the years. We are also delighted to welcome Mrs Ila Johnson one of our oldest residents who was a baby when work on the building started. Mrs Johnson celebrated her 101st birthday this year.
Council itself resided there until 1969 when it moved to Forum North. Since then the building has been home to many community service organisations and is currently home to the Citizens Advice Bureau, the Migrant Centre - Settlement Support and WINGS, Literacy New Zealand, Whangarei Association of Specific Learning Disabilities, Epilepsy Northland, Northland MS Society, Northland OSCAR Network and Counselling Therapy.
