New Dates and Entertainment for Winterfest 2012

Towncentre Taupo today confirmed the dates of Winterfest 2012. Festivities will begin on Wednesday 22nd August and are planned for the following 5 days, finishing with the annual trolley derby on Sunday 26th August. While Winterfest usually falls within the July school holidays, the festival has been expanded and moved into August. This is so we have a better chance of getting snow onto the domain and to also coincide with the Destination Great Lake Taupo Grabit campaign, aimed at attracting visitors to our region for the month of August.

“We’re really excited about Winterfest 2012,” said Julie McLeod from Towncentre Taupo. “We’ve got five days of entertainment planned that is sure to get locals out of the house and enjoying everything truly magnificent about winter in the Taupō region.“

There will be something for all ages including food & wine, comedy, the arts, snow and adventure.

Holiday makers destined to Taupō for the July school holidays can be excited by a plethora of events that have been planned. Taupo is known as the ‘Events Capital’ of NZ and the middle weekend of the July school holidays is just another example of a ‘stacked’ weekend.

New Zealand’s largest fresh water fishing event, the Great Lake Taupo Fishing Tournament kicks off Thursday 5th of July through to Saturday. Based in Kinloch the event attracts around 500 keen anglers chasing a big brown or rainbow trout on NZ’s Great Lake.

Sunday 8 July will see over 600 runners and walkers lined up on the side of Mount Tauhara for the Saucony Half Marathon or Smiths Sports Shoes 10km event. This event is round one of the 63.3 series of 3 half marathons that take place over the Taupo winter.

For those seeking an ‘indoor’ option, the Starlight Cinema Hobby Expo on the 7th and 8th of July provides a great opportunity. The expo features over 55 exhibitors and is aimed as an affordable holiday entertainment package. Admission includes some activities available for children, entry in the raffle and magician show which is on throughout the day.

And for the adrenaline junkies, the Taupo Motorsport Park has plenty to offer. On Friday there is a test day and on Saturday the Taupo Car Club are holding a four hour Endurance race.
