Shared funding essential for rail service

MEDIA RELEASE

Tuesday 27 June, 2012

Shared funding essential for rail service

Horizons Regional Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council will present a business case to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) next month in a bid to save the Capital Connection.

If the case gains support from NZTA and the service is retained, Horizons’ contribution for 2012 will be funded by the Council’s transport reserves. This contribution will be revisited in 2013 as part of consultation on Horizons’ annual plan.

Chair of Horizons Passenger Transport Committee Vern Chettleburgh describes the Palmerston North to Wellington rail service as “a vital link for the region’s commuters”.

“We are currently working with Greater Wellington to prepare a business case and will do all we can to retain the Capital Connection. However, any subsidy from Horizons is heavily dependent on funding from NZTA.

“If a subsidy goes ahead this year, Horizons contribution will be funded by transport reserves and we will look forward to consulting with our communities in 2013 around how this service will be funded going forward,” he said.
