Transmission Gully Decision - A 'Landmark Day' For Porirua City and Its Residents
Porirua Deputy Mayor Liz Kelly has expressed delight that the decision to proceed with Transmission Gully motorway has been confirmed today by the Environmental Protection Agency's Board of Enquiry.
Deputy Mayor Kelly says, "This is a landmark decision for the country, the Wellington region and for Porirua City.
"As a community, Porirua has been unwavering in our support for Transmission Gully motorway over other options in and out of the Capital and we've waited a long time for this decision. We are aware of the potential for siltation damage to our priceless Pauatahanui Inlet, however we trust the work done by the Board of Inquiry and the conditions that have set to protect the Inlet from that potential damage."
The new route will ensure the transportation needs relating to the economic growth of our region and the lower North Island, will not compromise the relaxed lifestyle and attractive environment that Porirua's village communities currently enjoy.
It also means the region will have a vital third access point should a major landslide occur along the unstable escarpment above the existing coastal highway.
"We are absolutely delighted with the decision and now look forward to rolling our sleeves up, together with NZTA, and getting on with the process of construction."
