A 60 year old man has appeared in the Counties Manukau Court on a charge of assault after an alleged shooting incident in South Auckland early this morning.

The man has been remanded in custody and will reappear again on Monday.

Police have not ruled out further serious charges being laid.

Police went to an address in Druces Road Manukau at about 1.30am this morning Saturday 16 June 2012 after reports that a 60 year old female had been assaulted.

The victim was transported by ambulance to hospital where a CT scan revealed that there was a bullet lodged in her head. Surgery is required to remove the bullet. Her condition is described as critical.

Police have located a firearm and a shell casing. An area canvas has been completed and witnesses interviewed. No other person is being sought in relation to this incident.

Police enquiries will continue over the weekend.
