Man Severely Burned by Cooking Oil Rescued in Marlborough Sounds

A Life Flight Trust team has rescued a man suffering from severe burns in the Marlborough Sounds.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, was tasked to fly to Port Gore in the Marlborough Sounds around 8:30pm.

Upon the helicopters arrival the team found a 42 year old Nelson man suffering from burns on about 20% of his body.

"Apparently the man was cooking with hot oil in a house and the oil caught fire.  As he carried the burning pot outside he tripped and hot oil splattered over parts of his body" says Dave Greenberg, Life Flight Crewman.

The injured man suffered moderate to severe burns on his arms, feet and other parts of his body.

He was flown to the Avalon Helipad in Lower Hutt and transferred to Hutt Hospital ED via a road ambulance.  His burns are not believed to be life threatening and he is currently being assessed and treated in Hutt Hospital.

The Life Flight Trust is a charity providing air rescue and air ambulance services. It operates the Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a national air ambulance service. It relies on support from the public and sponsorship from partners such as Westpac to provide these services. Further information can be obtained from www.lifeflight.org.nz
