Selwyn District potentially earthquake-prone buildings list updated

Independent engineering reports reviewed by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) have resulted in some changes to Selwyn District’s potentially earthquake-prone buildings list.

In February, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) had sent letters out to the owners of 37 buildings in the Selwyn District asking for them to furnish independent engineering reports outlining how the buildings perform according to the current building code.

These detailed engineering assessments are now filtering through the CERA process.

A further five buildings which needed assessments were added to this list recently:

• Burnham Military Camp Boiler House
• Lincoln University Johnston Memorial Laboratory
• Southbridge Smallbore Rifle Club
• Geoff Hampton Engineering, Southbridge
• McMillans Water Wells office building, Southbridge

Buildings that have now been removed from the list because they have been rated above the earthquake-prone threshold are:

• Burnham Military Camp Boiler House
• Burnham Military Camp Manager’s House
• Burnham Military Camp Regimental Historical Centre
• Lincoln University Hudson Hall
• Lincoln University Johnston Memorial Laboratory

Buildings removed from the list because they have been converted to residential:

• Hororata Hotel

Buildings confirmed as earthquake-prone are:

• Glentunnel Magazine Building complex, Glentunnel
• St John’s Anglican Church, Hororata
• St Paul’s Anglican Church, Tai Tapu
• Lincoln University Ivey Memorial Hall

The Selwyn District Council will ensure any buildings confirmed as earthquake-prone are not accessible by members of the public while their futures are decided.

Council immediately closed and fenced off or signposted all Council buildings on the list – the Doyleston Library, the Sheffield Memorial Pool changing rooms, the Lakeside Community Memorial Hall, the Greenpark Hall, Dunsandel Hall, Glentunnel Post Office and Tai Tapu Library.

Council Building Manager Ian Butler says these buildings might be closed for some time.

The George Roy Ellesmere General Store in Springston has been demolished, so it has also been removed from the list.

The current list of these buildings identified by a Selwyn District Council assessment is available on the Council website, www.selwyn.govt.nz/earthquakes/.
