Moves to secure train service are welcomed
Kapiti Mayor Jenny Rowan has welcomed the announcement that the Horizons Regional Council is seeking a three-way funding proposal with Greater Wellington and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to keep the Capital Connection rail service running.
“We have been involved in trying to address this issue for some time as the Capital Connection is the only commuter train service in and out of Otaki. It would be a huge loss to Otaki and our travelling residents if this service was cut. It is also important to the wider Wellington region and the linkages between it, the Manawatu and Palmerston North.
“The announcement
from Horizons Regional Council that they are keen to sit
down and talk with Greater Wellington and NZTA about a
funding package is good news. We appreciate the commitment
of Horizons to trying to secure the future of this service.
We also congratulate Greater Wellington Regional Council for
being willing to be part of this discussion. The
co-operation of these two organizations and most
importantly, NZTA, is essential to bringing about a good
result.
