Huntly Main Street to Get Pedestrian Crossings
Huntly’s Main Street is about to undergo an upgrade of its existing raised pedestrian platforms, to make crossing the road easier.
The four pedestrian platforms on Main Street have been used as uncontrolled crossings, and the work will involve three of the platforms being upgraded to marked pedestrian crossings.
The Huntly Community Board requested formal pedestrian crossings after concerns it was difficult for elderly, disabled and parents with young children to cross Main Street due to the high traffic volume. Tactile pavers will be installed on all three crossings, to assist visually impaired pedestrians.
The raised platform adjacent to Garden Place will be closed to pedestrians, but will remain in place in order to slow traffic. This is being done in order to comply with New Zealand Transport Agency guidelines that pedestrian crossings not be located within 100 metres of each other.
The work will begin within the next two weeks, and is expected to cause minimal disruption to motorists and pedestrians.
