Mayor On Fonterra Decision
Kapiti Mayor Jenny Rowan said she was very disappointed about the Fonterra decision to close the Kapiti Cheese and Ice Cream Store at Lindale.
“I was in discussions with Fonterra early this morning and was told that two staff members could be made redundant and another two could be offered positions elsewhere in the organisation.
“I am saddened by this but understand the decision to close the Lindale retail store was based on a commercial reality.
“What especially concerns me is the future of the Kapiti Cheese factory in Te Roto Drive. A senior Fonterra executive has confirmed to me that all speciality cheese making factories in the North Island are under review, including the one at Te Roto Drive.
“I have been assured that the review is still underway and that no decisions have been made.
“I have stressed to the senior executive the importance of both the jobs (more than 60) to the Kapiti economy and the Kapiti Ice Cream and Cheese brand.
“This brand has made Kapiti a household name both across New Zealand and elsewhere in the world and that significance should not be understated.
“I will be keeping a close eye on this issue and remain in touch with Fonterra.”
