Cheaper Bus Rides an option for Students

Cheaper Bus Rides an option for Students

Paul Bruce
Greater Wellington Regional Councillor

"Cheaper bus or train rides would be very welcome to students wanting to avoid taking on new loans," according to Regional Councillor Paul Bruce. "Many students had complained to me personally about the rising cost of public transport, and now there is a possibility of lower fares under options within a Greater Wellington Regional Council Fare Structure Review. These options include concessions for all youth below the age of 20, and a universal concession to all full time students."

The fare structure review proposals on the Agenda of Greater Wellington Regional Council this Wednesday 2nd May covers three main areas:

• The fare charging structure with new options including flat fares, fares based on distance travelled from point to point, or fares for a set time period.
• Changes to payment options and the usage rules associated with each tickets
• Fare concessions and who is eligible.

A major challenge for this proposal is improving the fare structure without changing the overall fare revenue.

The paper being presented to Council also outlines how the Consultation will be carried out, beginning with a targeted consultation August/September this year and ending with a final public consultation in February/March 2013.

The Agenda item can be found here.
