Te Kupenga Unites Maori Anti-Violence
Workers
A hui for practitioners working
with Maori whanau and men who are victims and perpetrators
of family and domestic violence will be hosted by the
National Network of Stopping Violence, Te Kupenga, this
week.
‘Kia Rangatira Te Mahi: Whakamanahia te
Whanau’ will be held at Hongoeka Marae at Plimmerton, near
Porirua, from Monday April 16 to Wednesday April 18
2012.
Te Kupenga is a network of 42 independent
community-based organisations – from Whangarei to
Invercargill – working to end violence and abuse in
families
Kaihautu (Director Maori Development) at
Te Kupenga, Parekotuku Moore, says the training seminar
builds upon the 2011 hui when the national network launched
a Maori best practice manual for Maori men’s stopping
violence programmes.
The standards framework,
‘Kia Rangatira te Mahi’, details performance measures,
examples and outcomes for seven key intervention principles.
“Practitioners representing our kaupapa Maori
member agencies are returning this year to further re-fine,
build upon, enhance, critique, improve and affirm their
practice,” Parekotuku says.
“Whakamanahia te
whanau means empower the family. This hui will ensure that
whanau are empowered to break the cycle of domestic violence
with quality intervention and support thanks to the
commitment and expertise of the practitioners to provide
what all families deserve – the very best in whanau ora
work.”
The hui begins with a powhiri at Hongaweka
Marae at 11.00 am on Monday April 16 2012. For more
