Location: Off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indian
Ocean
Magnitude: 8.7
The above magnitude is
provisional and may be increased or decreased as more
seismic data becomes available.
Summary:
The United States
Geoplogical Service has issued an Earthquake Report in
response to the above earthquake. This earthquake is in a
similar location and of a slightly lower magnitude to the
2004 Boxing Day tsunami.
MCDEM has assessed the information with the assistance of scientific advisors. Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat to New Zealand. MCDEM will continue to monitor the situation. Only messages issued by MCDEM represent the official warning status for New Zealand.
This advisory has been issued to all local civil defence authorities, emergency services, other agencies and media.
This will be the final message
via the national warning system for this event unless the
event parameters change significantly.
