Easter Weekend Escape Ideas in the Ruapehu Region
Walking tracks, mountain-biking, Ohakune and Whanganui River adventures
For those who haven’t yet decided where to go to for the Easter long weekend, Visit Ruapehu suggests packing up the car and heading to the majestic Ruapehu region.
Those seeking an adventure weekend can experience one of the recently completed cycle trails that form part of the national cycle trail network, and the settled autumn weather provides ideal mountain-biking conditions.
Key adventure trails include the Bridge to Nowhere which ends in a jet ride boat back along the Whanganui River to Pipiriki. For families, or those who prefer riding at a slower pace, trails such as the 14km Ohakune Old Coach or the 21km’s Fishers Track ensure a relaxed ride through the historic parts of the Ruapehu region..
To top off a day of adventure, Ohakune, National Park Village, Raetihi and Taumarunui have a huge range of accommodation and eateries. If you’re desperately awaiting the start of the ski season, Ohakune ski shops will be opening their doors for the famous Easter ski sales.
Mike Smith, Visit Ruapehu general manager says the Ruapehu region really is an all-year-round destination with an adventure to suit all.
“Ruapehu is such a brilliantly diverse region to visit. If you want an action-packed holiday you can choose from advanced mountain bike trails with some awesome downhill sections. Or if you prefer to relax and take it slow, there are several trails suitable for novices and families, or tramping options through either the Tongariro or Whanganui National Parks,” says Mr Smith.
