Discharge has no effect on water quality

Water quality in the Mazengarb drain has been unaffected by a problem at Fonterra Brands (Kapiti Cheese) yesterday that caused a small amount of whey to get into the waste water system.

It was feared that this could contaminate water in the Council’s Water Treatment Plant and that partially treated waste water may find its way into the drain. However, water quality tests confirm this was not the case.

Infrastructure Group Manager Sean Mallon says samples taken downstream from the Water Treatment Plant along the Mazengarb Drain and at its outlet to the Waikanae River show the incident appears to have had no affect.

“Council carries out regular monitoring of the Mazengarb Drain and previous downstream results when compared to yesterday’s readings show no discernable difference.”

Mr Mallon says Council didn’t expect there would be any contamination but it was great to have that confirmed.
